Climate, Coal Gasification, and California: Policy Considerations
CFEE Roundtable Conference on the California Greenhouse Gas Initiative
01.26.2007
California’s leadership on climate issues wins global praise, but:
- In climate terms, no nation or state is an island unto itself.
- Greenhouse gases (GHG) distribute themselves globally – location of the GHG source generally does not matter at all.
- Efficiency and renewables alone (even with nuclear power) cannot stabilize atmospheric CO2 & climate by mid-century.
- We need to begin today to deploy relevant clean coal technologies at commercial scale in the US, then globally.
- If we don’t, then mathematically we will have foreclosed any chance of meeting accepted climate stabilization targets.
