Steven Koppel joined the firm in March 2002. He serves on the firm’s Executive Committee and is responsible for establishing growth strategies in partnership with the Chairman. This includes identifying opportunities to build Heller Ehrman’s core practices and key markets. Mr. Koppel previously served as co-chair of the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group.
Prior to joining Heller Ehrman, Mr. Koppel was a partner at O'Sullivan LLP, where he formed their Real Estate Department. His practice focuses on real estate private equity, real estate finance and community development law. He has represented real estate developers, equity investors and financial institutions in the acquisition, development and financing of office buildings, hotels, multifamily housing, public storage facilities, shopping malls, warehouses, condominium projects, educational and medical facilities. His representation of equity investors extends throughout the United States and into Europe. He has represented financial institutions in their credit enhancement of tax-exempt bonds in connection with the financing of universities, medical facilities and multiple dwellings, and has represented major banks and developers in real estate workouts, restructurings, foreclosures and deeds in lieu of foreclosure. Mr. Koppel is also actively involved in representing Israeli companies in U.S. real estate development and is a member of the Board of the Israel Policy Forum.
Mr. Koppel has developed a national practice in community development law with extensive experience in the development of affordable housing and the Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit. He is a frequent lecturer on the subject. He is a co-author of Warren Gorham & Lamont's Housing and Development Forms and Commentary.
